What causes otitis externa in dogs?

Otitis externa is inflammation of the outer ear. Sometimes otitis externa in dogs is caused by allergies. In other cases, otitis externa can be the result of bacteria and/or yeast in the ear. Ear mites, growing hair, trapped water or a foreign body inside the ear can all influence how likely a dog is to get otitis externa. Frequent bathing, swimming and incorrect cleaning methods can also contribute to the infection.

The signs to look for include:

  • Foul-smelling ears
  • Ear scratching and/or head shaking
  • Discharge from the ear
  • Crusted or scabby skin under the ear flap
  • Swelling or redness around the ear
  • Reluctance to have head touched

While there are many products available to treat otitis externa*, Osurnia has a patented gel formulation that:

  • Penetrates deep, coating and adhering to the entire ear canal
  • Is uniquely designed to increase contact time at the infection site
  • Remains in place to fight otitis externa for up to 45 days
  • Unlike ear packs, works with the ear's natural cleaning process and is gradually eliminated over time via epithelial migration

Indications

*Osurnia is indicated for the treatment of otitis externa in dogs associated with susceptible strains of bacteria (Staphylococcus pseudintermedius) and yeast (Malassezia pachydermatis).

Important Safety Information

Osurnia is for otic use only under veterinary supervision. Do not use in dogs with known tympanic perforation or a hypersensitivity to florfenicol, terbinafine or corticosteroids. Adverse reactions observed during clinical trials include vomiting, increased liver enzymes and transient loss of hearing.
